Daddy is watching ESPN and taking in some highlights of a hockey game that he watched live last night, and then watched it again because he recorded it on our DVR. Many people think Daddy is a very big hockey fan and he absolutely is. However, with watching the same games and highlights over and over again I can’t help but think that perhaps he is a little slow too. You know what I mean – that is, the wheel is spinning but maybe the hamster died a long time ago. (You can see me reading a book and playing with Monty while Daddy is busy with his sports).
Anyway, while Daddy is preoccupied with his highlights, I have a little time to tell you about Groundhog Day which is today. With all due respect to the groundhogs around the world, there is only one true weather forecasting groundhog and his name is Punxsutawney Phil and he lives in Pennsylvania. On February 2nd of every year Punxsutawney Phil comes out of his burrow on Gobbler’s Knob to announce to the world what the weather is going to be like for the rest of the winter. If Phil sees his shadow, that means 6 more weeks of winter weather. If he does not, there will be an early spring. He conveys this message to the Groundhog Club President in Groundhogese, a language that is only understood by the current Groundhog Club President. Phil had been doing this for over 120 years which is pretty amazing because the average lifespan of a groundhog is about 9 years.
For those of you who have seen this ceremony either live or on television, you will know that Phil does not exactly come lumbering out of his burrow to carry on a conversation with the Groundhog President. It appears to me that he is yanked out against his will and is told what to say but perhaps I am a little overly skeptical.
Happy Groundhog Day to all and by the way, this morning Punxsutawney Phil announced that there will be 6 more weeks of winter.
